That dress looks great… and other fibs your friends tell you

A study has found that four in ten women will lie to friends about how an outfit looks, in order to make themselves look better by comparison.

Some will even go as far as ‘accidentally’ pouring drinks over a friend’s clothing to avoid being overshadowed.

Experts said the findings show women are far more competitive than they pretend to be – and it is in their nature.

‘In biological terms this is exactly right,’ said Phillip Hodson, fellow of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

‘It is about survival and attracting the best possible mate for yourself. We don’t want to ruin our own chances.’

He added: ‘We are not rational beings, we are emotional. Sometimes we want other people to fail and to look ridiculous.

‘We should understand we don’t always mean what we say. We are not as kind as we say we are.’

The study of 1,629 women revealed that 38 per cent of women lie to friends about their outfits to boost their own self-confidence.

Worst drinks in America.  We’re #1!

It turns out the PB&C shake at Cold Stone contains more than just milk, peanut butter and chocolate. The artery-busting concoction has enough saturated fat to rival nearly 70 strips of bacon, topping a new study by Men’s Health on the 20 worst drinks in America for the second straight year.

When purchased in its “Gotta Have It” size, the shake has 2,010 calories, 10 calories more than the recommended daily allowance for a 125-pound woman and just 790 calories short of what a 175-pound man should ingest in a day.

Really, America?  Lee Dewyze and not Crystal?  Really?

We knew it was going to happen, but still.  Lee Dewyze?  Disappointing.  Oh, yeah.  And Simon’s leaving.  And Paula was there.  And there was a medley of Chicago songs.  And Xtina.  And some other people.

Bring on America’s Got Talent!

Cell Phone Users Most Often Screen Calls From Friends, Family

People are more likely to turn their ringers off and pocket their mobile phones when they see that an incoming call is from a close friend or family member.

Researchers at the University of Salford found that nine out of 10 people admit to deliberately ignoring certain cell phone calls. The scientists further discovered that calls from work colleagues or strangers are almost always answered. The reason: It usually involves more time and effort to speak to someone you are close to.

The most common excuse for ignoring calls from a friend or family member is: “I didn’t hear it ring,” followed by “I was driving” and “I couldn’t find my phone.”

Tell us!  Now that we’re wired to death with cell phones, texting, social networking and tweeting, are you more or less available to communicate?

Happiness begins at 50 claims new research

The good life begins at fifty claims a new report which found that this was the start of the happiest time of our lives.

Stress, anger and worry fade after the landmark birthday when we begin experiencing greater daily joy than younger adults, it is claimed.

Despite increased risk of death and disease, it seems that people worry less and that they ignore the negatives and accentuate the positives.

Dr Arthur Stone, a psychologist of Stony Brook University, New York, said the findings were “striking”.

“You would think as chronic illness threatens life would get worse but that is not the case because people don’t focus on the threats,” he said.

“They focus on the good things in life like family and friends.”

A survey of more than 340,000 people published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found overall feelings of wellbeing improve as we pass middle age.

Crystal blew us away and some other guy was there doing something, too.

Each contestant sang three songs.  They picked their favorite song of the season, sang a song chosen for them by Simon Fuller, the Executive Producer, and performed the song that will be released as their single if they win.  Which, this year, for the first time, won’t be some awful dreck written for the winner, who will be forced to record it and release it to a disappointed public.

What did our Listener Panel of Judge Natalie think?  Let’s ask her.

What were her favorite performances?

Who’s going to win it?

And we just have to see Crystal sing “Up to the Mountain” again.

Finding the best sunscreens

You know the drill: when the sun’s rays are fierce, duck and cover.

EWG’s fourth annual Sunscreen Guide gives low marks to the current crop of sunscreen products, with a few notable exceptions. EWG researchers recommend only 39 – 8 percent – of 500 beach and sport sunscreens for this season.

The reason? A surge in exaggerated SPF claims above 50 and new disclosures about potentially hazardous ingredients, in particular recently developed government data linking vitamin A to accelerated growth of skin tumors and lesions. Learn more.
