TEENS AND 20-SOMETHINGS LOVE BAKING: A new study released today reveals that teenagers and those in their early twenties are six times more likely to bake something from scratch every day compared with any other age group. Sixteen to 24-year-olds who have grown up watching cooking shows on TV have been responding to the programs. The poll of more than 1,000 people found that older generations bake less regularly with nearly one fifth baking no more than once a month and only 1 percent of the over 55’s baking every day. However, six out of 10 people agreed that if they make the effort to create something from scratch at home, it tastes much better than bought food. (Daily Mail)

Women’s apparent need to gossip is apparently natural. According to a new book, ladies have a basic evolutionary need to voice concerns about others to their peers. John L. Locke wrote in Duels and Duets that the desire stems from a deeper need to protect the community they live in. He explained, “One study of gossip showed that gossipers were concerned about women who are bad housekeepers, and women who are bad mothers, and women who are promiscuous. Those things are all threats to each woman in a community; therefore they have every good reason to want to talk about those things.”

Now that October has arrived and Halloween is just a few weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about what costume to wear this year. The International Business Times put together a list of what it believes the top 10 Halloween costumes will be this year, guided by input from leading industry sources:

1. Zombie — IBT cited an industry leader saying zombies are the new vampires, in part because of the hit AMC cable TV show The Walking Dead.
2. Captain America — Star of a summer blockbuster movie this year.
3. Don Draper — From AMC’s hit show Mad Men
4. Charlie Sheen — No explanation needed after Sheen’s crazy meltdown of a year.
5. Frankie Stein — From Mattel’s Monster High franchise.
6. Thor — The star of another summer blockbuster movie this year.
7. Arnold Schwarzenegger — The former California governor left office and fell into a scandal involving him fathering a now 13-year-old boy with the family’s maid.
8. Anthony Weiner — Weiner’s very bad year involved him stepping down from office after tweeting sexual photos and messages to women who weren’t his wife — and having a sex scandal while carrying that unfortunate last name.
9. Ron Paul — The perennial GOP presidential candidate has helped make his libertarian ideas that once were viewed as loopy gain popularity.
10. Amy Winehouse — Winehouse is gone, but homage can be paid on Halloween, including with a wig based on her fabulous beehive hairdo.

Standing Up to Breast Cancer:
Hundreds of Pink Flamingos and Pink Innertubes
Return to Make Another Giant Statement about Breast Cancer

During October 2011’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, North Florida Regional Medical Center (NFRMC)will honor the courage of many women who have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer by placing a giant show of pink around the Duck Pond at the front of the hospital’s campus.

More than 500 pink plastic flamingos will be placed on the banks of the pond to represent the number of women who have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer over the past two years at North Florida Regional Medical Center. Breast cancer survivors, physicians, nurses and other staff of NFRMC are invited to place the flamingos in the spots they will stand during the month of October. Floating in the center of the pond will be a giant pink ribbon, the symbol for breast cancer, created from 100 pink inner tubes bound together and placed to float in the pond’s center. Members of the Gainesville-area media are invited to be there as the display is created late in the day on September 30 so that it is in place when Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins the next day, Saturday October 1.

When: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2011
Where: In front of the Duck Pond at North Florida Regional Medical Center, 6500 Newberry Road, Gainesville, Florida, 32605

The display will look something like this:
