Woman robs McDonalds wearing underwear as mask

Oklahoma (Reuters) – An unemployed woman who said she was desperate for money has been arrested on charges she robbed an Oklahoma McDonald’s with a white stretch girdle wrapped around her face as a makeshift mask.Authorities said 51-year-old Sharon Lain of Midwest City admitted to being the underwear-masked bandit who made off with the contents of a cash drawer from the fast-food restaurant around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

A surveillance video captured the woman on tape and was broadcast on local television, prompting several tips that led police to a condemned home on Wednesday night where Lain was found living, said Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes.

Police found the underwear – a white stretch girdle known as ’spanx’ – along with illegal drugs, including methamphetamine.

“She admitted to her role in the burglary,” said Clabes. “And we found the clothes she wore. This was a really bizarre disguise. I wasn’t sure what spanx was. I’ve never seen a woman with one on; now I’ve seen one on someone’s face.”

Police said Lain was a former night shift manager at McDonald’s but was fired about a month ago. Lain told investigators she needed money and suffered from a gambling problem.

She is being charged with second-degree burglary, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of paraphernalia and illegal trespass.

They call me the “Bad Luck Bandit.” No, seriously.

Suspect arrested after running out of gas

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Don’t call him Lucky. Wenatchee police say they arrested a 47-year-old Tacoma man for investigation of first-degree theft after he ran out of gas as he was leaving a store where Native American collectibles were stolen.

Alerted to the thefts by the store owner, police found the man on foot Wednesday after his car stalled about 50 feet from its original parking spot.

Sgt. John Kruse says the man is suspected of stealing several Indian collectibles from the Discount Center. Kruse says he was also in possession of several necklaces stolen from the Antique Mall — and is suspected of stealing a beaded Native American ceremonial garment bearing a price tag of $10,500.

Police are calling him the Bad Luck Bandit.

Robbery target turns the tables

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 11 (UPI) — A robbery target had her escape fall in her lap — literally — when a clumsy robber dropped his gun in her lap and she turned it on him, Florida police said.

Carol Costello, 69, was leaving a Daytona Beach Wal-Mart when a car blocked her way and a passenger with a gun jumped onto the hood of her car, The Orlando Sentinel reported Saturday.

The potential robber smashed a large hole in the windshield of Costello’s car with the gun, which fell from his hand and landed in Costello’s lap, the newspaper said.

She pointed it at the assailant, who fled back to his car.

As the alleged robbers’ car drove away, Costello was able to write down its license plate number.

The would-be robber also dropped his cellphone, which included photographs that allowed Costello to identify him to police.

Police have identified the alleged robber as Raymond Lewis Shepard, 25, of Daytona Beach, the Sentinel reported.

Tennessee police find home intruder asleep on couch

DYERSBURG, Tenn. – Police arrested a man who fell asleep after breaking into a home. The Dyersburg State Gazette reported that residents returned home and found the 22-year-old man asleep on the couch.

Terry McCreight, an investigators for the Dyer County Sheriff’s Department, said officers determined that the man once lived in the residence but had been asked to move.

Police said he broke a window and kicked in the door of the home while nobody was there on Thursday. Deputies arrived and took him into custody on without incident.

He was charged with vandalism and aggravated burglary.

German robbers destroy bank but fail to get cash

BERLIN (Reuters Life!) – Would-be robbers in Germany had to flee empty handed after blowing up everything in a bank except for where the money was, police said on Wednesday.

Photos in German media showed a scene of devastation in the northeastern village of Malliss, with the bank reduced to a pile of rubble and its roof completely obliterated. Amid the wreckage, only the cash machine could be seen intact.

“The explosion was so big, they had to run away without the money,” said local police spokesman Niels Borgmann. “Something evidently didn’t work the way the robbers wanted it to.”

Cars and buildings in a radius of up to 100 meters were damaged in the night time explosion, though no one was injured.

Police are searching for the suspected robbers.

Aussie valet gives Ferrari to wrong driver

SYDNEY — An Australian man took a gleaming Ferrari for a dawn joyride Friday after mistakenly being handed the keys by a casino valet.

The red F430 Spider, reportedly the property of a professional poker millionaire playing at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, vanished after the blunder.

“It has happened in the past from time to time that people lose their tickets, and in these circumstances we ask for proof of identification and a valid driver’s licence,” said casino spokesman Gary O’Neill.

“Those procedures were followed on this occasion.”

It took police six hours to find the high-performance vehicle at a suburban service station. A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with theft.

Police: Man makes up robbery to get ride home

LA PLATA, Md. (AP) — The Charles County sheriff’s office said a man called 911 and made up a story about being robbed so that he could get a ride home. Authorities said they were called to Hawthorne Road near Manor Drive in Ripley for a reported armed robbery on Thursday. The man told officers that he had been walking on Route 225 when a car stopped and a someone put a gun to his head and demanded money. The man claimed to have complied and the suspects fled.

But as officers searched the area and noticed inconsistencies in his account, the man admitted fabricating the robbery story because he wanted a ride home.

He said his cell phone was out of minutes and 911 was the only number he could still call.

Officials say charges against the man are pending.

Police: Woman Attempts Robbery, Tries To Eat Note

Authorities in Ohio said a woman tried to rob a bank with a note and then attempted to eat it once she saw a uniformed officer in line behind her. FBI Special Agent Harry Trombitas said the woman wearing sunglasses handed the teller the note at a Columbus Chase bank branch Wednesday morning.

Trombitas said in a statement that the off-duty officer wasn’t aware of what was going on, but when the woman noticed him, she grabbed the note and fled.

Outside, the officer arrested the 40-year-old Columbus woman, Lois Harvey. Trombitas said she tried to swallow the note as she was nabbed, then coughed it up onto the sidewalk.

Harvey remained jailed Thursday after a judge set bond at $250,085. Court records do not list her attorney.

Cops: Ill-timed potty break lands suspect in jail

SUFFOLK, Va. -An alleged ill-timed potty break has landed a man accused of robbing a Suffolk convenience store behind bars. Police said 43-year-old Sean Almond was found urinating behind a Kangaroo Mart minutes after a clerk reported the store had been robbed Thursday night. Police said Almond was carrying the stolen cash. Almond was charged with one count of armed robbery. Charges of assault and urinating in public are pending. Almond was being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond. It was not clear if he has an attorney.
