COUNTY PARKS SERVE UP FALL SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (Sept. 2, 2011) – It’s time to hit the field and get your fall sports fix. Marion County Parks and Recreation invites residents of all ages to explore baseball and softball sporting opportunities coming to county parks this season.

The Rotary Sportsplex (5220 SE Maricamp Road, Ocala) will host a fall baseball sign-up event for youth ages 6 – 18 as follows:

- Sept. 2 (6 – 8 p.m.).

- Sept. 3 (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.).

- Sept. 9 (6 – 8 p.m.).

- Sept. 10 (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.).

For those interested in softball, parks staff will host an organizational meeting (men and co-ed) at Wrigley Fields (405 E. Highway 316, Citra) on the following:

- Sept. 12 (7 p.m.).

As part of the coverage, ESPN’s College Football Live at 3:30 p.m. will televise a practice drill live.

Sad news from the sports and acting worlds, Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith died today at the age of 66. The first pick in the 1967 NFL draft, he won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts and played for both the Raiders and Oilers in a nine-year career. Then, he pursued the life of acting, the highlight of which was several turns as Moses Hightower in six Police Academy films.
