Come explore “Fire Stations” around the Preserve to learn more about prescribed fire and it’s importance in Florida.

We will have a visit from Smokey Bear, fire equipment demonstrations, displays from area fire professionals, movies, activities, and events for visitors to enjoy.

Get your FIRE FEST passport stamped at each station as you travel the world of prescribed fire.

Alachua Audubon Society Trip to Tuscawilla Preserve

SFCC_Zoo

The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo wants the community to see and experience what the Zoo is all about.  Join them on Saturday and Sunday, February 20 & 21, from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM to learn about conservation programs, animal care and what it’s like to work at a zoo.  Encounter animals, meet zookeepers, and participate in fun activities.  Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children, & free with a Santa Fe ID.

The Friends of Paynes Prairie invite you to an evening of observing the night sky. Come learn more about the stars and the planets thanks to the Alachua Astronomy Club who will supply the telescopes.

Enjoy sitting around a campfire while sipping hot chocolate & making smores. Bring your family/friends, chairs for relaxing, and your musical instruments for playing ’round the fire.

Location – Paynes Prairie is located 10 miles south of Gainesville on U.S. 441 or 3 miles from exit 374 of I-75. Both highways have signs to direct you to the park. Do not enter at the Main Entrance/Ranger Station. Please proceed to Hickory Ranch at 9300 S.E. CR 234. Click here for a map.

Paynes Prairie by Bicycle

A Guided Ride on the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail

See native wildlife, rare vistas of the sweeping grandeur of Paynes Prairie, and learn about our fascinating Indian and European history as you pedal your way leisurely along a beautiful, smoothly paved trail. Hear why the Prairie is sometimes a lake, and sometimes complete dry, and why it is so important to our way of life in North Florida. Learn about the huge animals which roamed this plain when people first arrived here. See native wildflowers and plants.

Details:
An easy 12 miles with frequent stops to explore our natural and cultural history. Ride starts at 9:00 a.m. from Boulware Springs City Park – SOUTH entrance, by the old pumphouse. Look for the “Prairie Bike Ride” sign, and the yellow Ford pickup. Ride finishes about Noon, and we usually go somewhere for lunch. Click here for a map of the trail

Requirements:
A serviceable bicycle, with aired-up tires. Helmets are strongly recommended.

Suggested Items to Bring: Clothing appropriate to the weather, sunscreen, water, snack food, whatever you what to carry.

This course will include one and hour of in-house instruction, a 15 minute break, and a one hour birding walk. Class is limited to 15 people. The course will cover an introduction to birding, comparison and use of field guides and binoculars and where to locate them, what characteristics are important to know in the identification of local birds. The course will close with a bird walk around the Rainbow Springs State Park headsprings.  People attending are requested to bring binoculars and birding books if they have them. Holiday with Horses is 90 minutes of family entertainment featuring horses and dogs with a holiday theme.  It’s fun for all ages, so bring the entire family!

The show will include a parade of holiday-decorated horse-drawn carriages, trained Spanish horses performing high-level movements, miniature horses on parade and performing tricks, a rodeo performance, a horse-drawn carriage obstacle race and a small-breed dog show.

There will be a shooting demonstration by mounted cowboys and a performance featuring monkeys riding sheep dogs while rounding up sheep. In addition, there will be a stick race for children and a grand finale.
