Congratulations to Michelle Staab, our Woman of the Week!

We actually received nomination letters for Michelle from FOUR different people.  This is the one we received from her husband Rick:

Dear Storm & Chris:

In 2006 Michelle found out that her oldest son was diagnosed with a rare disorder called genealized Dystonia. She co-founded a charity foundation called Tyler’s Hope for a dystonia cure to cure this disorder. She has raised incredible awareness and funds through tireless efforts with her foundation. 100% of those funds go directly to research for finding a cure. In 2009 she found out her daughter also has dystonia. Michelle has three kids a husband(me) that rely on her for everything. Every day she drives the kids in three different directions to school and back. She lifts them (hadincapped now and not able to walk) to the car and anywhere they need to go. Literally she carries people on her back. Michelle never complains and actually always has a smile on her face. She is very active and runs many of the PTA events as well as Tyler’s Hope events www.tylershope.org) She has inspired thousands of people by being so strong and giving back in every way possible without ever complaining. Her efforts will find a cure for kids with dystonia one day. She is a saint if there ever was one. Both kids and adults are in awe of the things she accomplishes and she is as humble as anyone I have ever met.   Listen to Michelle’s story: 6.10.10.4.Woman of the Week Michelle Staab

Congratulations to Debbie Race, our Woman of the Week!

Debbie’s friend Patty nominated her.  Here’s what Patty said about Debbie:

Dear Storm & Chris:

I would like to nominate Debbie Race as woman of the week. Debbie and her husband have six children and thirteen grandchildren.  Debbie is currently caring for 5 of her grandchildren and their mother, who has non-Hodgkins lymphoma and is now mostly bedridden.  Debbie takes her to her doctor’s appointments and radiation treatments, etc. Debbie herself has physical problems. She has a severe case of asthma and many times has to be hurried to the emergency room because of breathing problems.  She was also a victim of a five-car pileup on Maricamp Road a couple of months ago, and as a result has a non-functioning kidney.  Her car was totally demolished, and when people saw the car, they were sure no one could have lived through the ordeal. None of this stops Debbie, though, from caring for her family. Debbie has a sister who lives across the street from her who is diabetic and was recently hospitalized and was at risk for losing both feet. Debbie moved her into their home and cared for her faithfully and nursed her back to health. We don’t know anyone who has a bigger heart or a more positive outlook than Debbie.  She never thinks of herself, she just does what she does because she loves them.  We can’t think of anyone more deserving than Debbie to be honored with this award.  Listen to Debbie’s story: 6.03.10.4.Woman of the Week Debbie Race

Congratulations to Janet Owens, our Woman of the Week!

Janet’s sister Patti Jo nominated her.  Here’s what Patti told us about Janet:

Dear Storm & Chris:

I would like to nominate my sister Janet for your Woman of the Week because she saved my life.  Last year I was told I needed a liver transplant.   I was given 6 month to one year to live if I didn’t receive a transplant.  My sister stepped in took care of all the things I was too sick to do.  She literally led me by the hand to doctors appointments and took care of all the paper work when I was to ill to even know where to begin.  On march 17 I received my new liver, and yes, my sister was right there every step of the way.  Now that I am healing, she drives me Shands in Gainsville every week for my check ups.  And on top of all that, we had to put our mother in to a nursing home.  Janet also took care of Mom and all the things to make sure she is safe and well cared for.  Janet is wonderful person who gives so much and asks for nothing in return.  In my opinion my big sister will always be Woman of the Week and Woman of the Year.  Listen to Janet’s story: 5.20.10.1.Woman of the Week Janet Owens

Congratulations to Yvonne Scammacca, our Woman of the Week!

Yvonne’s daughter Lexi nominated her.  Here’s what Lexi told us about her mom:

Dear Storm & Chris:

My mom should be your Woman of the Week because she deals with kids all day as a 4th grade teacher and as a mom at home. She manages to keep our house clean and make dinner with barely any help. The most impotant thing is that she never complains even though she rarely gets a break. My mother is an amazing role model for her students, her kids, and her husband.  I felt I needed to show apprectiation to her for all that she does.  She has a great heart and really deserves a lot. That is why I think she should be the your Woman of the Week.

Congratulations to Kim Vij, our Woman of the Week!

Kim’s friend, Daphne, nominated her.  Here’s what Daphne told us about Kim:

Dear Storm & Chris:

I organize a local moms group of 150 families here in Gainesville. Kim is my Assistant Organizer for this group. She has really put in a lot of her time to make this group awesome. We just completed the March of Dimes Walk, and she organized some great fundraisers and put a whole little carnival together. Kim is there anytime I need her. She organizes a weekly playdate for kids that are 3 and up. Field Trips, Tours, Crafts. She comes up with some really wonderful ideas. Kim is a great leader, and means so much to me and to Alachua County Mamas. My husband has been sick several times in the 3.5 years since the group has been formed. Kim has organized meals and babysat my children when my husband was going through chemo treatments. I would really love to see her be Woman of the Week, she really deserves it, and it would be something just for her. since she does so much for others. Thank you! Daphne

Congratulations to Elissa Schee, our Woman of the Week!

Elissa’s friend, Dawn, nominated her.  Here’s what Dawn told us about Elissa:

Dear Storm & Chris:

Elissa’s husband almost died a few years ago due to unknown heart issues. Since then he’s been in and out of the hospital. She’s adopted her brother’s son when he was unable to care for him. Then when her brother unexpectedly passed away, she took custody of his baby girl, too. Then, tragically, last school year, her 13 year old daughter was killed in the fiery bus crash in Citra. Since then Elissa has continued to keep it all together AND she fights for laws to stop cell phone use while driving.  She struggles everyday to make ends meet and to create a normal life for her family.  She’s an amazing person who has been through so much in recent years.  I think it’s time someone take care of her for a change.

Congratulations to Ruthie Brown, our Woman of the Week!

Ruthie’s niece, Paige, nominated her.  Here’s what Paige told us about Ruth:

Dear Storm & Chris:

Ruthie Brown is my aunt.  She is a nurse practitioner at the V.A hosital in Gainesville.  She went to Iraq to serve as a nurse.  While she was over there, on her 21st anniversary, her husband past away of a massive heart attack.  She returned to Florida.  After almost a year back, her home was broken into and so much she loved was lost.  Then she installed a security system, which 3 weeks later more people came and cut the wire and broke in to steal everything left and that she replaced. Fearing for her life, she was forced to move out of her dream house, something her and her husband worked on together. After all of this, she still goes to work to help our veterans and remains calm for the sake of her children and grandchildren. She is exceptionally brave and a true hero to all.

Congratulations to Cristina Kelly, our Woman of the Week!

Cristina’s husband, Eugene, nominated her.  Here’s what Eugene told us about Cristina:

Dear Storm & Chris:

Cristina is my hero. No matter what life through at her or how hard things got, she never gave up. She went back to school a few years ago and became a nurse, a job she was truly destined to hold. All the while, she was still an incredible wife and mother to our family. She never let me or the kids down.  No matter what got in her way in life she always stood tall and persevered. She is one of the most amazing people I have ever known. She is a jewel as a mother to our children, Amanda, 16 and Alex, 10. She is never too busy to talk to them or help them with homework or just have fun with. On the outside of our home, she is just as helpful, just as busy and just as amazing. She is involved with our church retreat team, helping to bring others closer to God.  She is a school nurse, caring for middle school children, not just medically, but as someone to talk to. Some of these kids live in group homes, foster homes, with extended family rather than their parents, just extraordinary circumstances. She treats every one of those kids like they were her own. Her nurturing personality pours out in her work and she genuinely cares for every one of those kids that come through her office. For some of these kids, she is likely the most healthcare they get. She also works at a local hospital and worked throughout the H1N1 clinics in Marion County, providing flu shots to countless individuals. Cristina also serves as a Eucharistic minister in our church and recently became a minister to the sick, meaning that she brings the Eucharist to the sick in the hospital as well as homebound members of our church. Cristina is always the first one to lend a hand, volunteer to help or to jump in and bail someone out. She is selfless and also very humble. She would never tell anyone all of this and frankly would be embarassed by the praise. In closing, I think she should be Woman of the Week because she is absolutely amazing and because she is the most incredible woman I have ever met. I say that after having spent 21 years by her side and my amazement and wonder for her has never wavered. I want the whole world to see what I see every day.

Congratulations to Veronica Ziegler, our Woman of the Week!

Veronica’s mother-in-law, Deanna, nominated her.  Here’s what Deanna told us about Veronica:

Dear Storm & Chris:

Veronica is the best daughter-in-law that anyone could ever ask for. She is so easy to love and I feel so fortunate to be her mother-in-law. I can’t think of anyone better to raise my grandchildren! Besides being a super mother, and a loving wife to my son, she is also a nurse, although she is presently a full-time mother. Even before she became an “official” member of our family, she demonstrated what a loving and caring person she was. When Veronica was dating my son, Kirk, she stepped in and took care of my father on his death bed even though she really didn’t know my father well. My brother immediately took Kirk to the side and informed Kirk that Veronica was definitely a “keeper”! Years later, she did the same thing when my mother was on her death bed. And my mother thought Veronica was just it and the right woman for her beloved grandson, Kirk. My family immediately fell in love with Veronica because of her loving and caring manner that she assisted with our loved ones in their final moments. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award. Thank you Veronica for being there for all of us! Love, Mom Ziegler

Congratulations to Jennifer Jabo, our Woman of the Week!

Jennifer’s sister, Jamila, nominated her.  Here’s what Jamila told us about Jennifer:

Dear Storm & Chris:

My sister is a special person in my life. She took custody of me when I was doing the wrong things in high school. She taught me to focus on education and helped me to go from borderline drop out to honor student. I will graduate from high scbool this year with an associates degree. I could not have done it without her. Almost two months ago, my mom had to leave all my siblings with my sister so that she could deal with her risky cancer surgery. My sister became mother of six overnight.  She has been working three jobs to keep up with the expense and has been really stressed out with trying to coordinate getting us all to four different schools at different times, with only one car. If my mom doesn’t get better, she will need to adopt us all. The stress of it all has aged my sister in a short time. She barely sleeps and I can see that she is not taking care of herself. Some nights, there isn’t enough food and she does not eat so we will have enough. I can go on, but in short, my sister should be awarded woman of the year. She is my hero and in my book she deserves it all. For now, woman of the week would be a great way for the six of us to say we love you sis, and we appreciate your sacrifice. Please help my sister relax at the spa so she can look refreshed. Thank you.
